{"id":7773,"date":"2020-11-02T22:44:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T03:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceandplanetarynewswire.com\/?p=7773"},"modified":"2020-11-02T22:44:01","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T03:44:01","slug":"expect-more-mega-droughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceandplanetarynewswire.com\/?p=7773","title":{"rendered":"Expect More Mega-Droughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 1440px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/media.eurekalert.org\/multimedia_prod\/pub\/web\/247427_web.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1440px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1440\/960;\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Hamish McGowan gaining access to stalagmites around 120 metres below the surface in the Grotto Cave, NSW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mega-droughts &#8211; droughts that last two decades or longer &#8211; are tipped to increase thanks to climate change, according to University of Queensland-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-75071-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UQ&#8217;s Professor Hamish McGowan said the findings suggested climate change would lead to increased water scarcity, reduced winter snow cover, more frequent bushfires and wind erosion.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation came after an analysis of geological records from the Eemian Period &#8211; 129,000 to 116,000 years ago &#8211; which offered a proxy of what we could expect in a hotter, drier world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that, in the past, a similar amount of warming has been associated with mega-drought conditions all over south eastern Australia,&#8221; Professor McGowan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These drier conditions prevailed for centuries, sometimes for more than 1000 years, with El Ni\u00f1o events most likely increasing their severity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The team engaged in paleoclimatology &#8211; the study of past climates &#8211; to see what the world will look like as a result of global warming over the next 20 to 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Eemian Period is the most recent in Earth&#8217;s history when global temperatures were similar, or possibly slightly warmer than present,&#8221; Professor McGowan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The &#8216;warmth&#8217; of that period was in response to orbital forcing, the effect on climate of slow changes in the tilt of the Earth&#8217;s axis and shape of the Earth&#8217;s orbit around the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hamish McGowan wearing a headlamp crawling through a small cave to gain access to stalagmites around 120 metres below the surface in the Grotto Cave, NSW.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/media.eurekalert.org\/multimedia_prod\/pub\/web\/247426_web.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"479\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 720px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 720\/479;\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parched earth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In modern times, heating is being caused by high concentrations of greenhouse gases, though this period is still a good analogue for our current-to-near-future climate predictions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Researchers worked with the New South Wales Parks and Wildlife service to identify stalagmites in the Yarrangobilly Caves in the northern section of Kosciuszko National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Small samples of the calcium carbonate powder contained within the stalagmites were collected, then analysed and dated at UQ.<\/p>\n<p>That analysis allowed the team to identify periods of significantly reduced precipitation during the Eemian Period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re alarming findings, in a long list of alarming findings that climate scientists have released over the last few decades,&#8221; Professor McGowan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope that this new research allows for new insights to our future climate and the risks it may bring, such as drought and associated bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But, importantly, if humans continue to warm the planet, this is the future we may all be looking at.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mega-droughts &#8211; droughts that last two decades or longer &#8211; are tipped to increase thanks to climate change, according to University of Queensland-led research.
